It’s super easy and only takes 10 MINUTES to make! Super simple, yet it tastes like a little bit of a Mexican restaurant in your mouth.

All it takes is flour, chili powder, vegetable oil mixed together in a heated pot. Then add to that, chicken stock, tomato paste, oregano, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt. Be sure it’s actually chili powder because I’ve known people who have used cayenne pepper instead… End result- SPICY!

So, there you have it, friends! This goes great on chicken or beef enchiladas, or my homemade enchiladas, or even in some soups or chilis.

10 minute Homemade Red Enchilada Sauce

10 minute homemade red enchilada sauce. Tastes fresh and better than canned sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsps vegetable oil
  • 2 Tbsps all purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsps chili powder
  • 2 cups chicken stock
  • 3 oz tomato paste
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper optional-adds extra heat
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a sauce pan over medium heat, add vegetable oil, flour, and chili powder. Whisk together. It should be begin to bubble.
  2. Let bubble for 1 minute.
  3. While whisking, add chicken stock and tomato paste.
  4. After combined, add cumin, oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. Stir together. Let thicken for a couple minutes.
  5. Remove from heat.
  6. Pour over enchiladas.
  7. Enjoy!

  1. Hi Megan! Just popping over from you FBP post to say hello and that I’m in the same boat as you. I’ll post a reply there but wanted to say that this sauce (and that last shot especially) is gorgeous and sounds wonderful. Definitely adding it to my list of “to-makes”.
